ABC made waves when they published a scathing piece that accused the Alliance Defending Freedom, a non-profit Christian legal defense group, of being an “anti-LGBT hate group.”
This is a very chilling example of not only the lengths liberals and LGBT activists will go to, but also of how the mainstream liberal media will basically serve as a megaphone for their hateful rhetoric. The article by ABC specifically cites the Southern Poverty Law Center which has designated the Alliance Defending Freedom as a hate group, claiming they support the recriminalization of homosexuality abroad while making life as difficult as possible for LGBT communities in the United States.
Firstly, it is worth noting that the Southern Poverty Law Center is infamous for its liberal advocacy and is by no means a reputable source for measuring the accuracy of another non-profit. What ABC did is like asking the North Koreans to rate South Korea and using that as their official analysis. Often at odds with each other, the two organizations represent opposite client groups. For the Alliance Defending Freedom, they are often defending churches, religious organizations, and individuals facing discrimination on the basis of their religion. The Southern Poverty Law Center meanwhile focuses on fighting hate groups by identifying them.
They even have a website that lists all organizations and groups in the US that are considered “hate organizations.” Some like the KKK, neo-Nazi groups, and Mormon fundamentalists do deserve to be on that list. But other groups include major Christian evangelical organizations and even college groups for Christians. If you can stomach reading through the whole list, you’ll notice that there are almost no liberal or left-wing groups. However, the left can be just as bad and there are plenty of groups that have been spreading their own form of progressive hate, attacking anyone or anything that disagrees with them, going far enough to even threaten them.
So I’m not surprised that the Alliance Defending Freedom is targeted, but what should be shocking is that ABC is basically serving as a propaganda wing for them by using the Poverty Center’s definition of the Alliance in their title and article. Not once do they ask or even say what the Alliance claims they do and they only present the one side of the story, that of the Poverty Center. This is clearly yet more proof that the mainstream media is all too eager to quickly take the side of progressive extremists rather than try to chart a middle course between the two groups. Even I, an amateur blogger, know better than to engage in such unethical behavior.
I believe discrimination is like a spectrum and if you fight against one type of discrimination too hard, you risk entering a different form of discrimination. For example, discriminating against LGBT persons by not granting them their inalienable rights is wrong. But reacting to that by then forcing other people to accept them and violate their religious beliefs is also wrong and just a different form of discrimination. The LGBT community should be allowed to have the freedom to do what they want, but so should other individuals. If the LGBT community is going to demand that Christian bakers make cakes for them, then they shouldn’t complain if Christian customers come to them and demand they make cakes with slogans they disagree with.
America is a free country and if you don’t want to offer your business, you shouldn’t have to. Of course, you’ll lose customers and maybe be boycotted as a result but that’s the risk you must take. Liberal extremists like the Poverty Center meanwhile interpret any opposition to their agenda as hate and constantly harass these groups. The media’s job should be to be the referee and make sure both sides are presented but time and time again, we have seen the media always take the side of the Democrat or the liberal, or the other way around.
I don’t want to see more liberal or more conservative news networks. I want to see more objective news networks that are worried about presenting both sides of the story and letting readers make up their own minds rather than forcing a specific agenda down their throats.
